The George W. Housner Medal of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute is awarded to recognize members of the Institute and others who have made extraordinary and lasting contributions to public earthquake safety through the development and application of earthquake hazard reduction practices and policies. This award is not established to recognize major engineering or scientific research contributions or advancements, but it may very well be given to individuals who have made such contributions. This, the most prestigious award of the Institute, is granted only upon the unanimous concurrence of the Board of Directors.

The Alfred E. Alquist Special Recognition Medal is presented to an individual, company, or organization that has made substantial contributions to the field of seismic safety and earthquake risk reduction, having directly affected the seismic safety of the general population. The Medal may be awarded to recognize career contributions or notable and /or singular achievements. A significant contribution to the public good is the primary selection criterion.

The annual EERI Distinguished Lecture Award of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute is awarded to members of the Institute to recognize and encourage communication of outstanding professional contributions of major importance for earthquake hazard mitigation. The contributions of the recipient and the topic of the Distinguished Lecture should be of broad interest to the membership and may range from research to public policy development. The award is established to communicate developments on topics of major significance for earthquake hazard mitigation.

Undergraduate Student Seismic Design Competition (Wednesday and Thursday)
EERI‘s Student Leadership Council celebrates the running of the 11th Annual Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition (SDC) at the 10NCEE. Teams from thirty-eight universities pre-registered for the SDC, including international competitors from as far away as Vietnam, India and Romania. Wednesday is presentation day when each team presents their model to a panel and is judged on the structural system concept, the analysis method, the clarity and organization of the presentation and their communication skills. Thursday is dedicated to shake table testing of the complex tall building models made from balsa wood and weighing no more than 7 pounds.

EERI Honorary Members (Lunch: 12:00 - 1:30PM)
Honorary membership of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute is awarded to recognize members who have made sustained and outstanding contributions to the field of earthquake engineering and/or to the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and the pursuit of its objectives. Each recipient shall be announced at the Annual Meeting of the Institute and shall receive a framed citation and lifetime membership with waiver of membership dues.
Late sociologist Bill Anderson will be honored and remembered as part of this session. A paper he authored for the 10NCEE, The Great Alaska Earthquake and the Dawn of U.S. Social Science Earthquake Research, will be presented while recognizing his contribution to EERI and the field of disaster risk reduction.

The always exciting Calcutta Auction will take place following the student poster session. Conference attendees are encouraged to participate in an auction that helps fund the 10th Annual Undergraduate Student Design Competition created and managed by EERI’s Student Leadership Council. Each team will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. When results are announced Friday the winning schools and “owners” will win mega-dollars while supporting a great program.

Outstanding Spectra Papers - Clossing Plenary Session (9:00 - 10:00AM)
Outstanding Paper Awards for Earthquake Spectra are awarded to authors of papers judged to be outstanding contributions to earthquake hazard mitigation. In addition to Spectra papers an outstanding graduate and undergraduate paper are also awarded. Recipient’s papers have made a significant impact on the profession and provided an advance in the understanding of a particular topic. The awarded papers are of an exceptional technical quality, informative, and written for a broad audience. The Outstanding Spectra Paper Award for 2012 (Volume 28) is presented to Abbie Liel and Greg Deierlein for their paper Using Collapse Risk Assessments to Inform Seismic Safety Policy for Older Concrete Buildings.

EERI Outstanding Student Papers
Graduate and undergraduate students submit papers into the competition. The purpose of the competition is to promote active involvement of students in earthquake engineering and the earthquake hazards community. The papers are original work and are judged based on their contribution to the field and their overall quality. Awards are made for Outstanding Graduate and Undergraduate Papers.

Bruce A. Bolt Medal
The Bruce Bolt Medal is awarded jointly by the Constorium of Strong Motion Observation Systems (COSMOS), the Seismological Society of America (SSA), and EERI to recognize individuals worldwide whose accomplishments involve the promotion and use of strong-motion earthquake data and whose leadership in the transfer of scientific and engineering knowledge into practice or policy has led to improved seismic safety.

William B. Joyner Lecture Award
The Seismological Society of America (SSA), in cooperation with EERI, established the William B. Joyner Memorial Lectures. The purpose of the Joyner Lectures is to continue and generalize communication at the interface between research findings of earthquake science and the practical realities of earthquake engineering.

Shah Family Innovation Prize
With a generous gift from the Shah family, EERI annually awards the Shah Family Innovation Prize. This prize rewards younger professionals and academics for creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit in the field of earthquake risk mitigation and management. A cash prize is awarded to recognize and honor an individual who has been involved in the development of cutting-edge, innovative solutions to problems in earthquake engineering and related disciplines. The individual(s) should be in the developing or expanding stage of his or her career, with the promise of important contributions ahead. The intent of the prize is to stimulate further creativity and leadership in the earthquake risk mitigation community and EERI.

EERI Housner Fellows Program
The strategic objective of the Housner Fellows program is to recognize and equip promising and motivated young to mid-career professionals with the confidence, skills and sense of responsibility needed to become lifelong leaders and advocates of earthquake risk reduction. Financial support for the Housner Fellows Program comes from a bequest from George Housner, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the World Bank's Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery.

The Student Leadership Council will announce the winners of the 2014 Seismic Design Competition, and honor schools that have proven to be innovative, most communicative, and high spirited.
